Thanksgiving Day is an exciting time of year for many people and many look forward to all the time they get to spend with friends and family. Of course, the dinner is a very important part of the day and lots of preparation and then lots of cleanup too. But the decorations are also a very important part of the day and can set the stage for the whole day and make the ambience that everyone is looking for. Here are some ideas of things you can use to make Thanksgiving decorations with household items. Decorating for Thanksgiving and the fall season don’t have to be difficult or expensive, and there are many things you can use from around the house to make your own decorations this season.
Reuse clothing - Almost everyone has a pair of pants or overalls in their closet that are too big now or that they wish they fit into differently. This pair of jeans can be a great base for a scarecrow or other fall themed character. You’ve seen those cute little men that sit on the porches of seasonal decorators sitting on a hay bale. They are a great way to add some character to the outside of your house and to make it feel just a little more like the Thanksgiving season. Take the pants and stuff them with straw or pillow batting to make them look like real legs. You can also add a flannel shirt and fabric head to the doll to make it more like a person and sit comfortably on your front porch or deck.
Use kitchen and bath items - There are lots of different things you throw away every day and could be using for some kind of Thanksgiving decorations. Start with a roll from some paper towels and think of some things you can make. Some of the most commonly made animals are turkeys and you can use a roll cut into smaller pieces to make the body. Then start adding pieces of paper cut out to look like turkey feathers. You can make these out of scrap paper that can be found in many corners of the house if you have children. You can also use pots and pans that you normally use during the summer and make stickers that can be attached to them and make other Thanksgiving animals.
Old fabric and sheets – Fabric is a very important part of many decorations and you would probably be surprised how many things have lying around your house that could be used for fabric. Old clothing is another good option if you need fabric and bedding and pillowcases are also great for repurposing and making Thanksgiving decorations. Take some of those old sheets and incorporate the patterns into your cornucopia this year and make it unique and creative. Take some time to think of fabric you could be using for decorations that can be used for the whole season and specifically for Thanksgiving Day. You won’t be disappointed if you use some of that latent creativity and combine it with items already at your disposal.
Look around - Many people talk about spring cleaning because it is a time when people are looking to get outside and to do different things with their homes and the decor inside. But you can go through the same process any time of the year and find things that you won’t be using again or at least won’t need for a long time. Take some time to clean out the attic or storage room and keep your mind open and creative while you are looking to come up with ideas for your decorations. You can really save a lot of money and add interesting character to your projects as you find things to use in your home.
